Half of the examples of extreme abuse were various forms of physical aggression. Predominant examples of moderate abuse were psychological abuse and neglect. Physical neglect was most often cited as a mild form of abuse. The most frequently mentioned specific types of elder abuse were verbal abuse, psychological neglect, physical neglect, and hitting. There were no significant gender differences in the types of examples of abuse mentioned or in the severity attributed to the types of abuse cited. Elderly women were more often mentioned as victims of abuse than elderly men. As the age of the respondents increased, so did the number of examples of physical abuse. Data were collected with the Cross-cultural Definitions of Family Violence and Abuse questionnaire, an open-ended measure designed to assess respondents' opinions on violence between various family pairs. Respondents are asked to provide their own examples of abusive interactions between parent-child, husband-wife, wife-husband, siblings, and adult child-elder parent. For the current study, only the items pertaining to elder abuse were analyzed. 2 tables and 18 references
