Highlights of the report include: (1) in New Jersey, there were 708 fatal crashes with 770 people killed in 2006; (2) of the fatalities, 31.2 percent had consumed alcohol to some extent; (3) an average of 2.11 persons were killed every day; (4) the pedestrian death toll was 166; (5) of all fatal crashes, 82.6 percent occurred during clear weather conditions; (6) of known drivers involved in fatal crashes, 71.3 percent were males; (7) there were 50 tractor-trailers involved in 45 fatal crashes resulting in 53 fatalities; (8) since 1987 the number of motor vehicle fatalities has decreased from 1,023 in 1987 to 770 in 2006. Highlights of select areas of concern addressed in the report include: interstate highway fatalities, pedalcycle crashes, motorcycle crashes, tractor-trailer crashes, restraint usage, and fatal crashes and persons killed for selected holiday period. Highway fatalities are still the leading cause of death in New Jersey and the Nation. The nationwide death toll of 42,642 represents an average of more than 116 deaths per day.
