Among the key findings presented in the 2006 annual report: (1) an estimated 1.9 million drug items were analyzed by State and local laboratories in the United States in 2006; (2) for the top four drugs reported in the National Forensic Laboratory Information System (NFLIS), there was a 12 percent increase in total analyzed items from 2001 to 2006, from 1,328,818 items in 2001 to 1,555,249 items in 2006; (3) regionally, methamphetamine increased and heroin decreased significantly in the Northeast and South between 2001 and 2006, while cocaine increased in the Northeast; and (4) in addition to the top four drugs, hydrocodone increased significantly in all regions between 2001 and 2006. Through the NFLIS, this report provides a unique source of information on the Nation’s drug problem by providing detailed and timely information on drug evidence secured in law enforcement operations across the country. The report presents national and regional findings on drug cases analyzed in 2006, including city- and county-level results on drug seizure locations. The report is divided into five sections: national and regional estimates; major drug categories (narcotic analgesics, benzodiazepines, club drugs, anabolic steroids, and stimulants); drugs identified by laboratories in selected United States cities; and top four drugs by location.
