With 20 States (Ohio, New York, California, Illinois, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Colorado, Michigan, North Carolina, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, Alabama, New Jersey, Indiana, Kentucky, Virginia, Rhode Island, and Missouri) and 1 U.S. territory (Puerto Rico) represented, this report presents a compilation of more than 50 exemplary programs implemented by mayors and police departments to provide gang prevention and intervention strategies to communities plagued by gangs. These programs also provide effective gang suppression efforts in those cities where gangs are trying to take hold. Each program entry offers specific information in the areas of program establishment, program effectiveness, program funding, other agency/organization involvement, program contacts, and lessons learned from the program. Mayors across the country have taken the lead in building and sustaining effective programs against gang crime in their respective cities, and this publication looks at their success stories.
