This article is a response to a previous work on the Holtzworth-Munroe and Meehan batterer typologies.
Abstract
The article notes that the typology studies reviewed in the Holtzworth-Munroe and Meehan article make considerable methodological and substantive contributions to the field, and indicates that there are several definitional, conceptual, and methodological advances that can be explored in this work. Macro-frameworks such as the nested ecological model and the theory of triadic influence offer promising arenas for furthering an integrative, complex, and probably more complete understanding of offender typologies. A number of areas of concern are raised in this response, to include definitions of terms and questions concerning the methodology used in the testing. Topics considered for further consideration include distinctions between common couple and patriarchal violence; subtypes related to outcome; pathways from childhood trauma; and the nested ecological framework. The article reviews empirical testing done in 2000 of the Holtzworth-Munroe and Stuart typology which was first put forth in 1994. References
