This publication explains the National Amphetamine-Type Stimulant (ATS) Strategy 2008-2011.
Abstract
The aim of this strategy is to reduce the availability and demand for illicit ATS and prevent use and harms across the Australian community. To increase the Australian community’s knowledge about ATS and raise awareness of the problems associated with their production and use, the strategy discusses five priority areas with a range of activities under each area. The five priority areas are: community awareness and understanding of ATS use and related problems; the supply of ATS; the use of ATS; problems associated with ATS use; and organizational and system capacity to prevent and respond to ATS problems. Strategies are detailed to prevent the use and supply of illicit ATS; to respond to mental and physical health problems as well as social, familial, and financial problems for individuals and community; and enhance the capacity of organizations and the broad system to respond effectively to people affected by ATS. Final sections address future challenges, building an evidence base for law enforcement, coordinated response and partnerships, and monitoring and evaluation.
