This manual offers suggestions, recommendations, examples, and ideas for how to instruct students from the textbook, “Law Enforcement: A Human Relations Approach,” whose message is that community support is a necessity if law enforcement is to succeed.
Abstract
Following an introductory section on how the manual is structured to provide flexibility and discretion for the instructor in managing the course and lesson plans, course syllabus suggestions and lesson-planning suggestions are offered. Guidance is also provided for class projects, term papers, the use of guest speakers, and test materials. This is followed by lesson plans and test materials for each of the 15 chapters of the textbook. Subjects addressed in the chapters include law enforcement as a component of criminal justice, the nature and background of law enforcement, law enforcement limitations within constitutional government as an argument for professionalism in law enforcement, selective law enforcement, social change and community tension, and some historical background regarding community unrest. Other chapters address the impact on police of the continuing struggle for equality among minority and disadvantaged segments of the community, the causes of crime and delinquency, police and community crime prevention, and attitude and intergroup relations. Remaining chapters address racial, ethnic, and other prejudices; domestic crisis and juvenile problems; the problem of police public image; human relations and public relations as functions of community relations; and the high cost of failure to communicate. For instructors who use overhead projector teaching aids, some of the graphs, illustrations, and charts in chapters have been selected and grouped at the end of the manual for consideration as transparencies.
