This document outlines the scope, definitions, and standards developed for and applicable to DNA databasing laboratories.
Abstract
Effective July 1, 2009, the standards presented in this paper are applicable to databasing laboratories performing DNA analyses on DNA samples obtained from identified subject(s) for purposes of entering the resulting DNA profile or DNA record into a DNA database (the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS)). The standards are quality assurance measures placing specific requirements on laboratories performing DNA testing on database samples for inclusion in the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS). Prior to the quality assurance standards, a glossary of terms utilized within the standards is presented. The standards initiated under the quality assurance program and presented in this document cover the following areas: the quality assurance program, organization and management, personnel, facilities, sample control, validation, analytical procedures, equipment calibration and maintenance, documentation/reports, review, proficiency testing, corrective action, audits, safety, and outsourcing.
