This study evaluated the effectiveness of the Air Force Modified General Question Test, a polygraph format commonly used in the Federal Government.
Abstract
This controlled laboratory study provided evidence for the diagnostic value afforded by the Air Force Modified General Question Test (AFMGQT) format. The AFMGQT produced total and definitive accuracy rates that significantly exceeded chance levels for both truthful and deceptive participants. These results should be taken into consideration in light of the limitations and concerns described above. Additional and continuous research is recommended to expand the body of knowledge pertaining to the variety of uses afforded by the AFMGQT. The AFMGQT is a polygraph technique that is widely used across the United States Federal Government for a variety of purposes. It is used in both criminal specific and counterintelligence screening purposes. Despite its prominent use, no published research exists on the validity of the AFMGQT. The purpose of this study was to fill this empirical void, specifically on the validity and accuracy of the AFMGQT. A mock crime scenario was used that required deceptive participants to place a simulated bomb next to a road. Tables and references
