Based on a collaboration between scholars and practitioners working in the fields of prisons and penology, this is the first book of its kind that presents a definitive cataloguing of key terms, concepts, theoretical approaches, institutions, and policies associated with prisons and punishment.
Abstract
The dictionary’s primary geographic focus is England and Wales, although many contributors refer to prison systems, research, practice, and policy in other parts of the United Kingdom and internationally. The book’s format follows that of a dictionary in presenting terms, concepts, events, policies, theories, and practices alphabetically. For each entry, key texts and sources are listed, along with related entries. There are just over 200 entries, with entries ranging in length between 500 and 1,500 words. Entries are contributed by leading authorities in the field, both practitioners and academics. The editors provide an introductory overview of prisons and punishment. The book is intended for people studying prisons, working in prisons, and working with prisoners. It is part of a new series of dictionaries covering key aspects of criminal justice and the criminal justice system. Approximately 650 references and a subject index
