The article on the use of the 3-1-1 system in Minneapolis during the 2008 Republican Convention describes how the Republican National Committee’s 3-1-1 hotline provided the delegates information about the convention schedule and activities, transportation, traffic management, tourist attractions, restaurants, shopping options, and more. Another article reports on the Lancashire Constabulary’s (United Kingdom) winning of the Herman Goldstein Excellence in Problem-Oriented Policing Award. The award was for a multilayered project that focused on problems related to numerous road accidents in a rural area. A third article reports on a COPS-funded study of some of the issues and challenges that officers returning from military combat deployments face when they return to their police duties. Recommendations are offered on what police agencies can do to assist these returning officers and their families. Another article addresses the issue of rising fuel costs as this was discussed in three conference calls hosted by the COPS Office. Although participants, who represented 50 agencies, had adopted various approaches to the fuel challenge, all agreed that improved data collection and tracking of fuel usage and vehicle maintenance records were key to saving fuel. Other issues addressed in this issue are the COPS Office announcement of fiscal year 2008 grant awards and the role of technology in community policing.
