Total violent crime increased 19.5 percent in 2006, fueled by a 22.7-percent increase in robberies and a 21.6-percent increase in aggravated assaults. Total property crime increased 3.5 percent in 2006, with a 25.8-percent increase in arson and a 10.6-percent increase in motor vehicle theft. Murders, on the other hand, decreased 19.8 percent. Adult arrests for violent offenses increased 15.2 percent, and adult arrests for property offenses decreased by 0.8 percent. Juvenile arrests for violent offenses increased 12.5 percent, and juvenile arrests for property offenses decreased 1.4 percent. The 46-percent clearance rate for violent crime in 2006 was less than the 2005 rate of 47 percent. The 23-percent clearance rate for property crime in 2006 was less than the 2005 rate of 24 percent. The statewide odds of being a victim of violent crime increased from 1 in 371 during 1997 to 1 in 345 in 2006; and the statewide odds of being a victim of property crime declined from 1 in 29 during 1997 to 1 in 36 in 2006. Trends are reported for violent and property crime from 1997 to 2006, as well as trends in adult and juvenile arrests for violent and property crimes. One Wisconsin law enforcement officer died in a traffic accident while on duty in 2006.
