This research explored prisoners' viewpoints about same-sex rape, examined the prison slang used to describe it, and analyzed the role of same-sex rape in the prisoners' social world. Findings suggest that Israeli male prisoners rejected forced same-sex rapes in Israeli prisons. Unlike the prison subcultures in many Western male facilities, where same-sex male rape is experienced as a practical way of obtaining a sense of dominance, Israeli inmates conceive of same-sex rapists and sexual aggressors in prison as mentally and physically weak and thereby contemptible. Sexual harassment or homosexual rapes rarely take place in Israeli prisons, and Israeli inmates view homosexual rape in prison as disgusting and disgraceful and conceptualize it in highly negative emotional terms.
