This article discusses how mobile devices and high-tech surveillance tools and applications have affected community policing.
Abstract
This article discusses the changes, mostly positive, that have come to community policing as a result of the increased use of mobile devices and high-tech surveillance tools. The article provides examples of changes made by various police departments to incorporate the use of mobile devices. The use of these devices gives officers immediate access to information, and allows quicker and more efficient communication with citizens and other agencies. In addition, having the information available on demand means the officers are able to spend more time out in the community and less time back at headquarters. The use of the devices also allows neighboring agencies to interact more effectively with one another increasing the efficiency of law enforcement. Rather than isolating officers, the use of mobile devices and high-tech surveillance tools has resulted in an increase in surveillance, awareness, and communication within communities.
