This video provides information on new practices and procedures for use in forensic medical examination of children.
Abstract
This video, produced by the National Network of Children's Advocacy Centers, is for use by law enforcement and health care professionals who work with abused children. The video presents new practices and procedures for use by medical professionals during forensic medical examinations of abused children. The focus of these new procedures is to place the needs of the child first and ensure that the children receive the benefits of a thoroughly professional exam for suspected abuse. The video is divided into three sections: 1) this section discusses the use of photodocumentation as a tool to protect children from repeated medical examinations following an incident of alleged abuse; 2) this section discusses the use of the team approach as a critical means to ensuring that reports of abuse are followed successfully to completion; and 3) this section discusses the use of telemedicine as a way to make forensic medical examinations accessible, appropriate, and affordable for all abused children, especially those in remote areas of the country.
