This article presents a narrative summary and tabular data on responses from 48 U.S. correctional systems and the correctional system of Ontario, Canada, to a survey regarding correctional officer wages and benefits.
Abstract
Respondents were asked to provide salary ranges for four officer levels: training wages, entry level after hiring, after the first year of employment, and captains or their equivalent positions. Respondents also provided information on receiving payment for shift differentials, roll calls, direct care, longevity, and other options. In addition, each respondent was asked for information on cost-of-living increases, merit pay, holidays, vacation days, sick days, personal days, and disability benefits. Respondents also reported on insurance plans (life, health, and dental) available to correctional officers. The survey addressed the following miscellaneous benefits: education reimbursement, child care, housing, transportation/mileage reimbursement, and other options for higher pay (e.g., bilingual ability and physical-fitness level). The table presents data on responses for each responding correctional system.
