The Summit on Preventing Youth Violence was an activity of the National Forum on Youth Violence Prevention, whose mission is to reduce violence by youth, improve opportunities for youth, and encourage innovation and collaboration at both the local and Federal levels. During the summit, six cities presented comprehensive plans to address youth violence in their communities. Each city's plan incorporates multidisciplinary partnerships, balanced approaches, and data-driven strategies. In other news, there is an announcement of a change in the original "Race to the Top" incentive grants program after receiving feedback concerned about the impact of original incentives on States' compliance with mandates under the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act and on other protections for system-involved youth. Other news pertains to actions to address why many sexual assault kits are not sent to laboratories for testing and use in the investigation and prosecution of sexual assault; an online toolkit for communities committee to developing or improving Sexual Assault Response Teams (SART); highlights of the National Institute of Justice's annual conference (June 20-22, 2011); findings of the Pathways to Desistance Study, which examined crime patterns into early adulthood of serious adolescent offenders; and recent data on the trend in violent crime in the workplace. In addition, news is provided on the Preventing Wrongful Convictions Project, punitive damage awards in State courts, recent reports from the "New Perspectives in Policing" series, and the need for peer reviewers to evaluate and rate competitive grant applications received by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. A calendar for significant upcoming events is provided.
