Abstract
This 2 hour video conference provides expert panel members to discuss best practices in corrections. Panel members include Dr. Todd Clear, Florida State University; Bobbie L. Huskey, President of the American Corrections Association; Dr. Donald Andrew, Department of Psychology, Carleton University; Dr. Allen L. Ault, Chief of the National Institute of Corrections Academy; Professor Vincent O'Leary, State University of New York; and Reginald A. Wilkinson, Director of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction. This presentation reviews the history of corrections and shows how the mission has changed during the last few years. It then provides background on the 1971 Attica Prison riot. From there the panel explains the research about how punishment and the increased use of incarceration have contributed to crime. The program identifies strategies and programs that work best with lower and higher risk offenders. And finally, a segment is provided which focuses on available assistance and how to incorporate what works into correctional programs.
