Abstract
This July 2011 edition of the FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin contains four primary articles that discuss ways of improving working conditions for law enforcement personnel. The first article, Police Negotiations with War Veterans, examines the challenges faced by returning war veterans that can sometimes lead to their involvement with law enforcement authorities. The second article, The Early Notification Program, discusses development of a program by the Normal, IL, Police Department that aids in the interaction between citizens with special needs and responding law enforcement personnel. The third article, Vicarious Traumatization and Spirituality in Law Enforcement, discusses how effective training programs and a culture of spirituality can assist officers in managing stress, responding to trauma, and leading a more satisfying life. The fourth article, Violent True Believers, examines different types of violent true believers, individuals committed to an ideology or belief system that advances the killing of self or others as a legitimate means of furthering a particular goal.
