This assessment found that as of December 31, 2002: about 544 metric tons of cocaine were shipped from South American and sent to the United States, while an additional 316 metric tons were shipped to non-U.S. markets; increased eradication efforts in Columbia saw a decrease in the coca crop of 15 percent; during the same time, Peru and Bolivia saw an increase in cultivation of coca; of the cocaine shipped to the United States, approximately 72 percent traveled through the Mexico/Central America Corridor, 27 percent traveled through the Caribbean Corridor, and 1 percent was shipped directly from South America to the United States; the majority of the cocaine traffickers used small high-speed boats to move the product on the Eastern Pacific Vector; and of the 316 metric tons shipped to non-U.S. markets, approximately 75 percent was bound for European markets.
