Major findings from this report include: in 2009, there were 1,469 emergency service vehicle traffic crashes involving 1,513 emergency service vehicles in Missouri; 22.5 percent of the vehicles involved in crashes were on an emergency run at the time of the crash; and of the 1,513 vehicles involved in traffic crashes in 2009, 73.9 percent were law enforcement vehicles, 12 percent were fire vehicles, and 11 percent were ambulances. This report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol presents statistical information on the problem of emergency service vehicle traffic crashes in the State. Data for this report were obtained primarily from the Statewide Traffic Accident Records System (STARS). The findings from the analysis are presented in four sections: 1) an overview of Missouri's emergency service traffic crash problem; 2) the findings from an analysis of crashes involving police vehicles; 3) the findings from an analysis of crashes involving fire vehicles; and 4) the findings from an analysis of crashes involving ambulances. The problem of emergency service vehicle traffic crashes is of significant concern to State and local traffic safety authorities because these vehicles, and their staff, are critical public safety resources whose loss due to traffic crashes adversely affects the public welfare.
