This book from the National Research Council presents the results of a project from the Council's Committee on Drug Abuse Prevention Research. The intent of the project was to follow a research-oriented agenda examining topics of specific interest to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). The project's research agenda included: assessing the theoretical basis for preventive interventions as derived from etiologic research; identifying which drug abuse prevention strategies have been adequately evaluated and found to be effective, non-effective, and counter-effective; assessing the practicality of effective strategies for use in wide-scale applications; and identifying which strategies have unknown effectiveness due to inadequate evaluations. The methodological issues evaluated under this project included identifying major design and methodology problems in existing prevention strategies, identifying possible approaches for correcting such problems in current and future research, and identifying minimum requirements for assessing effectiveness of prevention strategies.
