This fact sheet, compiled by the National Center for Injury and Prevention at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), presents information on understanding school violence. School violence is defined in this fact sheet as youth violence that occurs on the way to or from school, on school property, on the way to or from a school-sponsored event, or at a school-sponsored event. Several issues are discussed in the fact sheet: why school violence is considered a public health problem, how school violence affects the health of adolescents, who is at risk for school violence, what can be done to prevent school violence, how the CDC approaches the idea of prevention of school violence, and efforts by the CDC to prevent school violence. Some of the CDC's efforts include the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System, the Health Curriculum Analysis Tool, the School Health Index, and the Striving to Reduce Youth Violence Everywhere initiative.
