The Carrera Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program was developed in 1984 and it uses a holistic approach to help teens develop personal goals and the desire for a productive future and the desire to avoid pregnancy. The program works with children, both boys and girls, from ages 11 and 12 through high school and beyond to discover interests and develop talents and emphasize the importance of education and employment. The Web site includes links to the Carrera Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program Web site, components of the Carrera Program, information about Dr. Michael Carrera, and information on awards and recognition for the pregnancy prevention program. The Carrera program has seven components: education, employment, family life and sexuality education, mental health services, full medical and dental care, self-expression, and lifetime individual sports. The site notes that in communities where the program has been implemented, there has been a 50 percent reduction in teen birth rates. In addition, the program has resulted in other positive youth development outcomes such as increased likelihood of high-school graduation and college admission, increased employment experiences, more bank accounts, and increased use of private physicians instead of emergency rooms.
