Abstract
The ATLAS (Athletes Training & Learning to Avoid Steroids) program is a scientifically proven program for male athletes that provides healthy sports nutrition and strength-training alternatives to the use of alcohol, illicit, and performance-enhancing drugs. This Web site is hosted by the Oregon Health & Science University, which pioneered the research that developed the ATLAS program. The ATLAS program consists of 10 sessions, each of which lasts 45 minutes. Sessions are usually held once a week and include role-plays, student-created campaigns or public service announcements, and instructional, interactive games. During these sessions, the athletes practice goal setting and learn to self-monitor their nutrition behaviors. The Web site also has information on ATLAS research findings, ATLAS awards, ATLAS videos, and ATLAS program materials and pricing. Highlights of the results from schools that have implemented the program include decreased new alcohol and drug use, reduced steroid use, reduced supplement use, fewer drinking and driving occurrences, improved nutrition and exercise practices, greater ability to refuse drugs, and students believing they were better athletes as a result of program participation.
