Abstract: |
This report from the Bureau of Justice Statistics contains statistical tables on hate crime victimization for the period 2004 through 2012. Highlights of the findings include the following: no statistically significant change was observed in either the number of total hate crimes or violent hate crimes that occurred from 2004 to 2012; after a decline from 2004 to 2005, the property hate crime victimization rate remained stable from 2005 to 2012; the percentage of hate crimes motivated by religious bias was nearly three times higher in 2012 (28 percent) than in 2004; the percentage of hate crimes involving violence increased from 78 percent in 2004 to 90 percent in both 2011 and 2012; and an estimated 60 percent of total and violent hate crime victimizations were not reported to police in 2012, a slight decline from 2011, when about three-quarters of total (74 percent) and violent (73 percent) hate crime victimizations were not reported to police. This report uses data from the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) to provide information on the characteristics of hate crimes and hate crime victims from 2003 through 2012. Information in the report is presented for number and rate of hate crimes; hate crime motivation; differences between hate and nonhate crimes; weapons and injuries; hate crimes reported to the police; violent hate crime victim and offender characteristics; and hate crimes reported by the NCVS and UCR. The survey methodology is discussed. Tables, figures, and appendixes |
