COMPREHENSIVE COLLECTION OF PAPERS ON ALL ASPECTS OF DRUG ABUSE BEHAVIOR, TREATMENT, PREVENTION, LAW ENFORCEMENT, AND PSYCHOLOGICAL AND SOCIAL DETERMINANTS PREPARED BY PERSONNEL FROM ALL AREAS OF THE DRUG ABUSE FIELD.
Abstract
THIS VOLUME PRESENTS THE WORK OF FEDERAL, STATE, AND PRIVATE AGENCIES COPING WITH DRUG ABUSE AND ITS PREVENTION. THE BOOK IS AN ENCYCLOPEDIA OF CASES ILLUSTRATING THE CHANGES THAT HAVE TAKEN PLACE AND THE NEW SETS OF WORKING TERMS AND PERSPECTIVES WITH WHICH EXPERTS MUST CONTEND. INCLUDED ARE THOROUGH DISCUSSION OF ENFORCEMENT AND MASS DETECTION OF USERS. WIRETAPPING, NO-KNOCK ENTRY, HOT LINES, SURVEILLANCE OF PATIENTS, AND THE NET EFFECTS OF POLICIES ARE EXAMINED. THERE ARE STUDIES FROM THERAPEUTIC COMMUNITIES, EXAMINATIONS OF THE ADDICTED WOMAN AND MOTHER, AND A COMPREHENSIVE SECTION ON THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THIS VOLUME INCLUDE A PAPER DEMONSTRATING THAT WHILE OUR NATIONAL EFFORT HAS BEEN SUCCESSFUL IN REDUCING THE ILLICIT DRUG USE AND CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR OF ADDICTS, IT HAS NOT BEEN AS SUCCESSFUL IN FINDING EMPLOYMENT AND IN INDUCING PSYCHO-SOCIAL STABILITY. THE WORK PRESENTED BY A NUMBER OF EPIDEMIOLOGISTS SUGGESTS THAT THE UNITED STATES MAY BE ON THE WAY TOWARD DEVELOPING A SCIENTIFICALLY BASED NATIONAL ESTIMATE OF THE INCIDENCE AND PREVALENCE OF VARIOUS FORMS OF DRUG ABUSE. THE CONTRIBUTION BY PHYSICIANS INVOLVED IN INDUSTRIAL PROGRAMS INDICATES THAT DRUG ABUSE AMONG THE EMPLOYED IS FINALLY RECEIVING OVERDUE ATTENTION. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
