THIS REPORT DESCRIBES A MAJOR EFFORT TO SYSTEMATICALLY ASSESS THE PROBLEM OF SAFETY AND SECURITY IN A PUBLIC HOUSING ENVIRONMENT AND TO DEVELOP AND TEST A FEASIBLE AND INTEGRATED APPROACH TO THE SECURITY PROBLEM.
Abstract
DATA WERE COLLECTED FROM A SURVEY OF THE RESIDENTS ON THEIR VICTIMIZATION EXPERIENCES, THEIR FEAR OF CRIME, AND THE DEGREE TO WHICH THEY WERE ALTERING THEIR BEHAVIOR BECAUSE OF EITHER FEAR OR ACTUAL VICTIMIZATION. THE PENETRABILITY OF THE INDIVIDUAL DWELLING UNITS TO FORCIBLE ENTRY WAS ASSESSED AND THE ENTIRE SITE WAS ANALYZED TO DETERMINE ITS VULNERABLE FEATURES. THE PLAN WHICH EVOLVED FROM THE SURVEY DATA INCLUDES SITE IMPROVEMENT RECOMMENDATIONS, RECOMMENDATIONS CONCERNING SECURITY IMPROVEMENTS TO INDIVIDUAL UNITS AND NEW APPROACHES DESIGNED TO IMPROVE POLICE SERVICES AND POLICE-COMMUNITY RELATIONS. THE PLAN ALSO INCLUDED THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A CRISIS INTERVENTION CENTER FOR THE PROJECT.
