A DESCRIPTION OF THE OPERATIONS OF THE MANAGEMENT REVIEW DIRECTORATE (MRD), A BRANCH OF THE CANADIAN PENITENTIARY SERVICE AND NATIONAL PAROLE SERVICE WHICH REVIEWS AND EVALUATES PRISON OPERATIONS AND MANAGEMENT.
Abstract
THE MANAGEMENT REVIEW DIRECTORATE IS A UNIT OF ELEVEN SPECIALISTS, DIVIDED INTO TWO MANAGEMENT - REVIEW TEAMS AND A SPECIAL FINANCIAL REVIEW TEAM. THE MRD VISITS EACH CANADIAN CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION FOR TWO WEEKS, WHERE THE REVIEW TEAM OBSERVES AND EVALUATES THE INSTITUTION'S OPERATIONS. THE TEAMS CONDUCT EXTENSIVE INTERVIEWS WITH INSTITUTION STAFF, MANAGEMENT, AND INMATES TO DETERMINE PROBLEM AREAS AND TO EXPLORE POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS. AFTER THE ON-SITE REVIEW, THE TEAM PREPARES A DIRECTOR'S CHECKLIST OF MINOR PROBLEMS AND A FINAL REPORT. THIS REPORT IS DISCUSSED WITH CORRECTIONAL ADMINISTRATORS AND REGIONAL DIRECTORS, SO THAT ACTION DECISIONS ON THE PROBLEMS RAISED CAN BE MADE. THE MRD AIMS AT REVIEWING EACH INSTITUTION AT LEAST ONCE EVERY TWO YEARS.
