THIS REPORT BRIEFLY EXPOUNDS ON THE POSITIONS OF LEADING CRITICS OUTSIDE THE CORRECTIONAL BUREAUCRACY AND OF TWO HARSH CRITICS FROM WITHIN THE BUREAUCRACY.
Abstract
THE SCHOOLS OF THOUGHT FOLLOWED BY THE CRITICS MIGHT BE CLASSIFIED AS 'ABOLITIONIST' AND 'PRAGMATIC'. THE LATTER GROUP WOULD PROBABLY LIKE TO SEE THE PRISONS ABOLISHED, BUT, SHORT OF THAT, THEY WOULD LIKE TO SEE IMPROVEMENTS IN CONDITIONS IN PRISONS AND IN THE DAY-TO-DAY LIFE OF INMATES. THE CRITICS REFERRED TO INCLUDE ALVIN BRONSTEIN, RAMSEY CLARK, MARVIN FRANKEL, ROBERT MARTINSON, VESSILA MITFORD, NORVAL MORRIS, LEONARD ORLAND, MILTON RECTOR, DAVID ROTHENBERG, DAVID ROTHMAN, ERNEST VAN DEN HAAG, ANDREW VON HIRSCH, TOM WICKER, JAMES Q. WILSON, JEROME MILLER, AND DAVID FOGEL.
