THIS TEXT OFFERS A CRITICAL EXAMINATION OF PAST AND CURRENT CORRECTIONAL PRACTICES AND POLICIES IN ORDER TO ANALYZE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CORRECTIONS AND THE CRIME RATE AND PROVIDE DIRECTION FOR FUTURE EFFORTS.
Abstract
THIS BOOK WAS COMMISSIONED BY THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF LAW ENFORCEMENT AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE. THE INITIAL SECTIONS REVIEW THE HISTORY OF CORRECTIONS AND CURRENT THEORIES AND PRACTICES. THE AVAILABLE RESEARCH CORRECTIONS IS THEN DISCUSSED IN GENERAL TERMS, BUT THE EMPHASIS IS ON WHAT IS AND IS NOT KNOWN ABOUT PREVAILING CORRECTIONAL IDEOLOGY, PRACTICE AND REFORM MOVEMENTS. FINALLY, THE TEXT OFFERS AN AGENDA OF POLICY AND RESEARCH ISSUES THAT MUST BE FACED. A SMALL SET OF CRITICAL ISSUES ARE FIRST LISTED. THIS IS FOLLOWED BY A LONGER ENUMERATION OF PRESSING, BUT NOT CRITICAL, ISSUES. FINALLY, A LIST OF KEY QUESTIONS FOR CONSIDERATION BY STATE PLANNING AGENCIES ADMINISTERING LEAA MONIES IS INCLUDED.
