THE NATURE AND CAUSES OF POLICE VIGILANTISM ARE ANALYZED AND DISCUSSED, WITH REFERENCES TO RECENT LITERATURE, AND EXAMPLES DRAWN FROM A VARIETY OF CULTURAL SETTINGS.
Abstract
VIGILANTISM IS SAID TO BE ONE OF SEVERAL MANIFESTATIONS, INCLUDING CORRUPTION AND POOR PERFORMANCE OF POLICE, FRUSTRATION AND DISSATISFACTION. ALTHOUGH IT IS SAID THAT THE LACK OF COHERENT THEORY CONCERNING ABUSES PERPETRATED BY THE POLICE MAKE PREDICTION OF THE IMPACT OF SPECIFIC REFORMS UPON VIGILATISM DIFFICULT, SEVERAL POSSIBILITIES ARE PRESENTED.
