THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROJECT WAS TO REDUCE INQUIRY RESPONSE TIME FROM THE 1972 AVERAGE OF 20 SECONDS TO A MAXIMUM OF FIVE SECONDS AND MAINTAIN THE REDUCED LEVEL.
Abstract
THIS PROJECT WAS UNDERTAKEN IN RESPONSE TO A STEADILY INCREASING TRANSACTION VOLUME OF THE DALLAS COUNTY INFORMATION SERVICES DEPARTMENT'S TELEPROCESSING NETWORK WHICH HAD SERIOUSLY DEGRADED THE INQUIRY RESPONSE TIME. A SOFTWARE PACKAGE (SET OF COMPUTER PROGRAMS) CONSISTING OF A DATA ACCESS METHOD AND ITS COMPANION TELEPROCESSING MONITOR WAS INSTALLED TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM AND TO PERMIT CONTINUED SYSTEM EXPANSION. ACCORDING TO FIGURES COMPUTED BY GRANT PERSONNEL, RESPONSE TIME DECREASED TO BETWEEN 1.5 AND 2.0 SECONDS OVER THE PERIOD OF THE GRANT (DECEMBER 1973 TO NOVEMBER 1974), CALUCLATIONS OF TRANSACTIONS PROCESSED INCREASED FROM 7000 TO 28,000, AND THE NUMBER OF LOCAL TERMINALS ROSE FROM 91 TO 175. IN ADDITION, THREE SUBSYSTEMS WERE ADDED.
