THE SELECTIONS WERE WRITTEN BY POLICE OFFICERS AND SOCIAL SCIENTISTS WHO ARE INVOLVED WITH POLICE, AND THEY EMPLOY THE INDIVIDUAL POINT OF VIEW. THE BOOK'S EMPHASIS IS ON THE CONSTRUCTIVE USE OF AUTHORITY AND WITH THE PROBLEMS OF ESTABLISHING THE ATMOSPHERE BOTH WITHIN POLICE DEPARTMENTS AND AMONG CITIZENS TO PERMIT THE MOST EFFECTIVE USE OF THAT AUTHORITY. PROFESSIONALISM IN POLICING, THE ROLE OF POLICE, AND POLICE/COMMUNITY RELATIONS ARE DISCUSSED. REAL LIFE ACCOUNTS INVOLVING RAPE, FAMILY CRISIS UNITS, NEIGHBORHOOD TEAM POLICING, AND A HOSTAGE-SEIZING INCIDENT ARE RECOUNTED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)...KAP
