THIS BROCHURE PROVIDES SUMMARY INFORMATION ON THE PROJECT ACTIVITIES AND RESEARCH FINDINGS OF 21 CRIMINAL JUSTICE RESEARCH PROGRAMS SPONSORED BY THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF LAW ENFORCEMENT AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE.
Abstract
THE OFFICE OF RESEARCH PROGRAMS IN THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF LAW ENFORCEMENT AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE DEVELOPS AND SPONSORS RESEARCH PROGRAMS THAT ARE DESIGNED TO IMPROVE THE UNDERSTANDING AND EFFECTIVENESS OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. THE RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTED IN THIS BROCHURE WAS SELECTED BECAUSE IN EACH CASE IMPORTANT NEW KNOWLEDGE HAS BEEN GENERATED AND ALTERNATIVE APPROACHES SUGGESTED ON KEY CRIMINAL JUSTICE ISSUES OF CURRENT INTEREST. THE RESEARCH FINDINGS SUMMARIZED IN THE BROCHURE ARE BASED ON PROJECTS ADMINISTERED BY EACH OF THE OFFICE'S SIX DIVISIONS: POLICE, COURTS, COMMUNITY CRIME PREVENTION, CORRECTIONS, ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY, AND SPECIAL PROGRAMS. WITHIN EACH OF THESE BROAD AREAS, A NUMBER OF RESEARCH PROGRAMS ARE DESCRIBED. FOR EACH PROGRAM, INFORMATION IS PROVIDED ON THE PROGRAM BACKGROUND, MAJOR RESEARCH FINDINGS, AND THE AVAILABILITY OF PROJECT REPORTS. AMONG THE SPECIFIC RESEARCH EFFORTS DESCRIBED IN THIS REPORT ARE STUDIES OF POLICE PERFORMANCE MEASURES, SENTENCING GUIDELINES, WOMEN'S CORRECTIONAL PROGRAMS, LIGHTWEIGHT BODY ARMOR, AND THE NATIONAL EVALUATION PROGRAM.
