THIRTY-FOUR OF A TOTAL OF 58 PERSONS UNDERWENT A FOLLOW UP MEDICAL HISTORY EXAMINATION AS PART OF A PROJECT SUBSIDIZED BY THE DEUTSCHE FORSCHUNGSGEMEINSCHAFT (DFG: GERMAN SOCIETY OF RESEARCH).
Abstract
THESE SUBJECTS HAD COMMITTED HOMICIDE OR AN ACT OF VIOLENCE AS MINORS AND HAD BEEN EXAMINED IN THE CLINIC OF CHILD AND ADOLESCENT PSYCHIATRY IN MARBURG. THE PROVISIONAL RESULTS OF 26 EXAMINATIONS ARE REPORTED. THE AVERAGE DURATION OF THE FOLLOW UP WAS 10 YEARS, THE CRIME HAVING BEEN COMMITTED BETWEEN THREE AND 23 YEARS BEFOREHAND. THE AVERAGE AGE OF THE SUBJECT WAS 26.6 YEARS. SIX OF THE 26 PERSONS WERE IN PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITALS, SEVEN IN PENAL ESTABLISHMENTS, AND 13 SUBJECTS WERE AT LIBERTY. THE SOCIAL AND PROFESSIONAL PERIOD OF PROBATION TOOK A FAVORABLE COURSE WITH THE SUBJECT ALREADY LIVING AT LIBERTY, THOUGH DIFFICULTIES IN THE PROCESS OF REHABILITATION OCCURRED WITH ALMOST ALL SUBJECTS. ONLY SEVEN PERSONS (27 PERCENT) COMMITTED ANOTHER PENAL OFFENSE, WITH ONLY FOUR COMMITTING NEW ACTS OF VIOLENCE AGAINST PERSONS. HALF OF THE TARGET SAMPLE - NOT COUNTING THOSE IN PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL - SHOWED SIGNS OF PSYCHIC DEVIATION IN THE MINNESOTA MULTIPHASIC PERSONALITY INVENTORY. ONLY TWO SUBJECTS WERE PSYCHOTIC, ONE OF WHOM HAD BEEN SO BEFORE THE CRIME WAS COMMITTED. THE POSSIBLE CAUSES OF THE POSITIVE FOLLOW UPS ARE EXPLAINED, AND SOME DE-LEGE-FRENDA-ASPECTS CONCERNING THE FUTURE HANDLING OF MINORS AND ADOLESCENTS BY CRIMINAL LAW ARE DISCUSSED.
