THIS MANUAL WAS WRITTEN BY BASICS (BAR ASSOCIATION SUPPORT TO IMPROVE CORRECTIONAL SERVICES) TO ASSIST LOCAL BAR ASSOCIATIONS IN THE PLANNING AND IMPLEMENTATION OF ALTERNATIVE CORRECTIONAL PROGRAMS.
Abstract
THE BASICS PROGRAM WAS ESTABLISHED TO DEVELOP THE BAR ASSOCIATION'S CAPABILITY TO PARTICIPATE IN CORRECTIONAL REFORM EFFORTS AND TO EFFECT IMPROVEMENT OF STATE AND LOCAL SYSTEMS THROUGH ADEQUATELY FUNDED BAR PROGRAMS. THE FOUR ALTERNATIVES DISCUSSED IN THE MANUAL ARE COMMUNITY MEDIATION PROGRAMS, PRETRIAL INTERVENTION PROGRAMS, MUTUAL AGREEMENT PLANNING IN PROBATION, AND COMMUNITY BASED CORRECTIONAL PROGRAMS. PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT CONSIDERATIONS ARE OUTLINED AND EXAMPLES OF EACH TYPE OF PROGRAM PROVIDED.
