AMERICAN SPEECH AND HEARING ASSOCIATION TASK FORCE REPORT CONTAINS INFORMATION ON SPEECH AND AUDIO SERVICES AVAILABLE IN THE PRISONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR IMPROVEMENTS.
Abstract
STUDIES HAVE FOUND A HIGHER INCIDENCE OF SPEECH AND AUDIO PATHOLOGIES IN THE PRISON POPULATIONS THAN AMONG THE OUTSIDE POPULATIONS. THE TASK FORCE SAW ITS JOB AS DETERMINING PRIORITIES TO CORRECT THIS. TO DO THIS, IT DEVISED A MODEL FOR PROVIDING SPEECH PATHOLOGY/AUDIOLOGY SERVICES IN PRISON. SOME OF THESE INVOLVED INSTITUTIONAL SERVICES AND SOME INVOLVED COMMUNITY BASED SERVICES. THE TASK FORCE RECOMMENDED THAT PRISON OFFICIALS BE GIVEN INFORMATION ON SPEECH AND HEARING PROBLEMS, THAT LEAA BE CONTACTED REGARDING THE TASK FORCE FINDINGS FOR ACTION ON THEM, AND THAT CONGRESS AND THE AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION BE CONTACTED AND APPRISED OF THIS PROBLEM....BS
