FINAL EVALUATION OF AN OMAHA MUNICIPAL COURT AGENCY ESTABLISHED IN JULY 1974 TO GATHER ADEQUATE INTAKE INFORMATION TO ASSIST IN DETERMINING PROPER CASE DISPOSITION AND TO DEVELOP ALTERNATIVE SENTENCING.
Abstract
THE INTAKE ACTION SERVICE (IAS) WAS ORGANIZED TO IDENTIFY PROBLEMS CAUSING OR AGGRAVATING CRIMINAL OFFENSES; PROVIDE EFFECTIVE ALTERNATIVES IN THE DISPOSITION OF CRIMINAL MATTERS; COORDINATE COURT ACTIVITIES WITH CONCERNED AGENCIES; AND REDUCE RECIDIVISM. IAS ACTIVITIES INCLUDED INTERVIEWING CLIENTS; ADMINISTERING PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTS TO DETERMINE CRIME CAUSES; MAKING TREATMENT RECOMMENDATIONS; CONDUCTING PRESENTENCE INVESTIGATIONS; DESIGNING A REHABILITATION STRATEGY; MONITORING CLIENT PROGRESS; AND CONDUCTING COURSES RELATED TO REHABILITATION. RESULTS INDICATE THAT IAS SUCCESSFULLY IDENTIFIED A NUMBER OF CLIENT PROBLEMS AND THIS CAUSED A REDUCTION IN RECIDIVISM. OTHER FINDINGS INCLUDE THAT IAS PROVIDED EFFECTIVE ALTERNATIVES FOR ALCOHOL AND SOME DRUG OFFENDERS AND THAT COURT ACTIVITIES HAVE BEEN COORDINATED WITH THOSE CONCERNED AGENCIES ...EB
