THIS STUDY TAKES A LOOK AT THE PROGRESS TOWARD ESTABLISHING A VOLUNTEER UNIT WITHIN THE DIVISION OF CORRECTIONS OF THE STATE OF WEST VIRGINIA.
Abstract
THE PROGRAM SET OUT TO ESTABLISH AN ON-GOING RECRUITMENT AND TRAINING PROGRAM TO SELECT VOLUNTEERS WHO WOULD WORK WITH PROBATION AND PAROLE OFFICERS, BE GIVEN A CASELOAD, AND PROVIDE ASSISTANCE AND SERVICE DURING THE OFFENDER'S TRANSITION FROM INSTITUTION TO COMMUNITY. IT ALSO HOPED TO REDUCE THE RECIDIVISM RATE OF THOSE OFFENDERS WHO HAD A VOLUNTEER ASSIGNED TO THEM. THE EVALUATION FOUND THAT THE VOLUNTEERS HAD BEEN UNDER UTILIZED BY MANY PAROLE OFFICERS, THAT THERE WAS A NEED FOR BETTER COORDINATION OF VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT, AND THAT A MORE COMPREHENSIVE STUDY OF THE PROGRAM WAS NEEDED....BDS
