A SURVEY OF SOME 1700 CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT FACILITIES AND AGENCIES IN THE UNITED STATES WAS CONDUCTED TO GAIN AN ANALYTICAL, NATIONALLY REPRESENTATIVE PICTURE OF THE ORGANIZATION OF SUCH SERVICES.
Abstract
CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES, PUBLIC HEALTH NURSES, SCHOOL SYSTEMS, HOSPITAL MEDICAL PERSONNEL, HOSPITAL SOCIAL SERVICES DEPARTMENTS, JUVENILE AND FAMILY COURTS, AND POLICE AND SHERIFF DEPARTMENTS WERE INTERVIEWED IN RELATION TO CONTEXTUAL ISSUES AND DILEMMAS, THE MAGNITUDE OF THE PROBLEM, EPIDEMIOLOGICAL PATTERNS, AND STRUCTURE AND PERFORMANCE OF PROGRAMS. THIS REPORT PRESENTS SURVEY FINDINGS IN THESE AREAS AS WELL AS RECOMMENDS IMPROVEMENTS IN THE IDENTIFICATION AND CONTROL OF THE PROBLEM. IMPROVEMENTS ARE SUGGESTED IN THE AREAS OF PRIMARY PREVENTION, IDENTIFICATION AND REPORTING, CRISIS INTERVENTION, SERVICES TO CHILDREN, PROFESSIONAL TRAINING, PROGRAM GUIDELINES, AND INTERAGENCY COORDINATION. EXTENSIVE TABULATIONS OF INTERVIEW DATA ARE INCLUDED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED)...ELW
