A SCHEME FOR FACILITATING THE MOVEMENT OF VISITORS TO THE SUFFOLK COUNTY, MASS., COURTHOUSE FORM THE ENTRANCE TO THEIR DESTINATIONS IN THE COURTHOUSE COMPLEX IS PROPOSED.
Abstract
CONSISTING OF TWO BUILDINGS, THE COMPLEX IS LARGE AND HOUSES EVERY TYPE OF JUDICIAL OPERATION FOR CIVIL, CRIMINAL, ADULT, AND JUVENILE CASES AS WELL AS THREE LARGE RECORD STORAGE ACTIVITIES. DAMAGE RESULTING FROM A BOMB EXPLOSION IN THE NEWER COURT BUILDING HAS ADDED TO TRAFFIC FLOW PROBLEMS IN THE COMPLEX. VISITORS FIND IT DIFFICULT FIRST TO FIND THE COURTHOUSE COMPLEX, WHICH IS LOCATED NEAR BOSTON'S GOVERNMENT CENTER, AND THEN TO DETERMINE WHICH OF THE TWO BUILDINGS TO ENTER, WHERE TO ENTER, AND HOW TO PROCEED FROM THE ENTRANCE. THE PROPOSED SYSTEM INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING COMPONENTS: DIRECTIONS FROM THE MAIN ENTRANCE TO PRIMARY POINTS OF INQUIRY FOR EACH MAJOR COURT OR AGENCY; DIRECTIONS AT THE POINTS OF INQUIRY TO SPECIFIC DESTINATIONS; AND AN INDEX, ALPHABETICAL BY COURT AND AGENCY, TO THE LOCATION OF EACH ACTIVITY IN BOTH BUILDINGS. REARRANGEMENT OF PUBLIC ENTRIES, CLARIFICATION OF BUILDING NAMES AND ROOM-NUMBERING AND FLOOR-NUMBERING SYSTEMS, AND ESTABLISHMENT OF STANDARDIZED SYSTEM OF EXTERIOR AND INTERIOR SIGNS ARE ALSO PROPOSED.
