THIS VIDEOTAPE AND COMPANION BOOKLET, BASED ON EXPERIENCES OF A DALLAS COUNTY, TEXAS RAPE PROGRAM, PRESENT INFORMATION ON MEDICAL EXAMINATIONS, AUTOPSIES, AND PEER COUNSELING IN CONNECTION WITH RAPE CASES.
Abstract
THE DALLAS COUNTY PROGRAM INVOLVES THE ACTIVITIES OF THE DALLAS COUNTY PARKLAND MEMORIAL HOSPITAL, WHERE VICTIMS ARE TREATED; THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS HEALTH SCIENCE CENTER, WHICH PROVIDES GYNECOLOGISTS TO CONDUCT EXAMINATIONS AT PARKLAND HOSPITAL; THE SOUTHWESTERN INSTITUTE OF FORENSIC SCIENCES, WHICH CONDUCTS LABORATORY TESTS AND PERFORMS AUTOPSIES OF VICTIMS; THE OFFICES OF THE STATES ATTORNEY; AND THE DALLAS WOMEN AGAINST RAPE, INC. (DWAR), WHICH OPERATES A RAPE CRISIS CENTER. AS OF 1976, AFTER 3 YEARS OF OPERATION, 123 CONVICTIONS HAD BEEN OBTAINED OUT OF 127 CASES PRESENTED IN A COURT OF LAW. ASPECTS OF INVESTIGATION AND TREATMENT COVERED INCLUDE: DETAILS ON THE MANAGEMENT OF A SEXUALLY ASSAULTED WOMAN; PROTOCOLS AND FORMS FOR EXAMINATION, DOCUMENTATION, AND COLLECTION OF MEDICAL SPECIMENS; PROCEDURES FOR THE FORENSIC AUTOPSY OF A FEMALE RAPE-MURDER VICTIM; PROCEDURES FOR MAINTAINING THE INTEGRITY OF AN EVIDENTIAL CHAIN OF CUSTODY; SCIENTIFIC ANALYSIS OF MEDICAL SPECIMENS TO CORROBORATE THE ALLEGATION; AND A DISCUSSION ON ESTABLISHING A PEER COUNSELING RAPE CRISIS CENTER BASED ON THE DWAR CENTER.
