THIS POLICE DEPARTMENT RELEASE DISCUSSES THE PROBLEMS OF COMMUNICATION BETWEEN PERSONS, PARTICULARLY BETWEEN POLICE OFFICERS AND PERSONS THEY DEAL WITH.
Abstract
CONSTITUTIONAL PROTECTIONS AGAINST ILLEGAL SEARCHES AND SEIZURES; THE FRUSTRATIONS OF POLICE OFFICERS IN ABIDING BY THE LAW'S PROVISIONS; AND THE NECESSITY OF HAVING SUCH SAFEGUARDS, EVEN THOUGH THEY MAY SEEM TO PROTECT CRIMINALS, ARE BRIEFLY DISCUSSED. THE IMPORTANCE OF CLEAR COMMUNICATION BETWEEN POLICE OFFICERS AND CITIZENS AND A RESPECTFUL ATTITUDE ON THE PART OF THE OFFICER WHEN CARRYING OUT HIS DUTES IS EMPHASIZED. THE EXAMPLE IS USED OF A POLICE OFFICER STOPPING SOMEONE FOR SPEEDING, GETTING HIM TO STEP OUT OF HIS CAR, AND CONDUCTING A SEARCH. THE DIFFERENT WAYS HE COULD GO ABOUT DOING IT AND THE CITIZEN'S REACTIONS TO EACH ARE EXAMINED. (VDA)
