WRITTEN FOR TEACHERS, THE STUDY DESCRIBES 12 ENCOUNTER SESSIONS, EACH FOCUSING ON A COMMUNICATION SITUATION TYPICAL OF THE CORRECTIONAL SETTING.
Abstract
THE COURSE WAS DEVELOPED AT CORRECTIONAL CENTERS THROUGHOUT NORTH CAROLINA FROM THE FALL OF 1971 THROUGH THE SPRING OF 1976. IT SEEKS TO ASSIST A WIDE VARIETY OF PRISON INMATES AND PERSONNEL GROUPS INCLUDING PRISON OFFICIALS ONLY, INMATES ONLY, PRISON GUARDS AND INMATES TOGETHER, AND INMATES WITH CUSTODIAL AND TREATMENT STAFF. THE 12 'ENCOUNTERS' OR LESSONS DEAL WITH ASPECTS OF COMMUNICATION IN GENERAL AND SPECIFICALLY WITH COMMUNICATION IN CORRECTIONAL SETTINGS, INCLUDING WORK AND STUDY RELEASE, PROBATION AND PAROLE, DISCUSSIONS WITH LAWYERS AND JUDGES, DRUG AND ALCOHOL THERAPY, AND RACIAL AND ETHNIC CONFLICTS. OTHER SETTINGS INVOLVE POSITIVE COMMUNICATION BEFORE A SMALL GROUP AND COMMUNICATION IN A LARGE SEMIFORMAL GROUP. LESSONS GUIDE THE TEACHER IN THE AREAS OF BEHAVIORAL OBJECTIVES, PHYSICAL FACILITIES REQUIRED, GENERAL ADVICE, THE TIME SEQUENCE, A SIMULATED ENCOUNTER AND EVALUATION. BIBLIOGRAPHIES, CHARTS AND ILLUSTRATION ARE INCLUDED. APPENDIXES INCLUDE A DISCUSSION OF GROUP DYNAMICS AND A MODEL WHICH INTEGRATES CONCEPTS, GAME THEORY, SCRIPT WRITING, AND DECISION MAKING.
