A 10-HOUR COURSE IN DEFENSIVE DRIVING DURING ROUTINE AND EMERGENCY OPERATIONS AND A 30-HOUR COURSE IN PURSUIT DRIVING ARE DESCRIBED IN A MANUAL USED BY THE COLORADO STATE PATROL ACADEMY.
Abstract
THE COURSES ARE DESIGNED TO PROVIDE ADVANCED TRAINING IN THE DRIVING SKILLS NEEDED TO MANIPULATE A VEHICLE UNDER EMERGENCY CONDITIONS AND TO INCREASE THE SAFETY OF BOTH PATROL OFFICERS AND THE PUBLIC. THE UNIT ON DEFENSIVE DRIVING INCLUDES 2 HOURS OF CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION, DURING WHICH STUDENTS ARE ACQUAINTED WITH THE HAZARDS OF ROUTINE AND EMERGENCY DRIVING OPERATIONS AND WITH TECHNIQUES FOR CONDITIONING THEMSELVES TO BE OBSERVANT. THE COURSE ALSO INCLUDES TWO 4-HOUR PRACTICE SESSIONS. THE UNIT ON PURSUIT DRIVING, WHICH CONSISTS OF 2 HOURS OF CLASSROOM PRESENTATIONS AND 28 HOURS OF FIELD PRACTICE, COVERS THE THREADING SYSTEM OF STEERING (A TECHNIQUE FOR NEGOTIATING CURVES AT HIGH SPEEDS), LANE POSITIONING, MAINTAINING THE APPROPRIATE POWER TRAIN TO INSURE MAXIMUM CONTACT BETWEEN ROAD AND TIRES, HIDDEN HAZARDS AND BRAKING, BACKING MANEUVERS, AND QUICK TURNAROUNDS. OUTLINES AND LECTURE MATERIALS FOR THE CLASSROOM PRESENTATIONS ARE INCLUDED, TOGETHER WITH DESCRIPTIONS OF FIELD EXERCISES AND OF THE ACADEMY'S DRIVER TRAINING FACILITIES. GUIDELINES FOR INSTRUCTORS ARE PROVIDED. (LKM)
