THE PROCEEDINGS OF A SEMINAR SPONSORED BY THE AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF CRIMINOLOGY WITH THE AIM OF IMPROVING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF CRIMINOLOGY LIBRARIES IN AUSTRALIA ARE DOCUMENTED.
Abstract
THE SEMINAR WAS ATTENDED BY 25 REPRESENTATIVES OF POLICE, CORRECTIONAL, COURT, AND UNIVERSITY LIBRARIES AND OF THE INSTITUTE'S J.V. BARRY MEMORIAL LIBRARY, AND BY 2 ACADEMIC CRIMINOLOGISTS AND 2 RESEARCH OFFICERS FROM THE INSTITUTE. THE PARTICIPANTS FOCUSED ON THE ROLE OF THE CRIMINOLOGY LIBRARY AND ON THE POSSIBILITY OF RATIONALIZING THE SERVICES AND COLLECTIONS OF AUSTRALIAN CRIMINOLOGY LIBRARIES IN THE INTERESTS OF EXTENDED COOPERATION. THE INSTITUTE AND ITS LIBRARY WERE SEEN TO HAVE CENTRAL ROLES IN SUCH COOPERATIVE VENTURES. RESOLUTIONS PASSED AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE SEMINAR EXPRESSED SUPPORT FOR THE INSTITUTE AND ITS PROGRAMS (INCLUDING A NATIONAL CLEARINGHOUSE FOR CRIMINOLOGICAL INFORMATION). SEMINAR PARTICIPANTS ENCOURAGED THE BARRY LIBRARY TO PLAY A MAJOR ROLE IN ESTABLISHING AND MAINTAINING A UNION LIST OF CRIMINOLOGY PERIODICALS IN AUSTRALIAN LIBRARIES AND A UNION CATALOGUE OF MONOGRAPHS. THE CONCEPT OF A NETWORK OF AUSTRALIAN CRIMINOLOGY LIBRARIES WAS ENDORSED. A WORKING GROUP ON LIBRARY SERVICES IN AUSTRALIAN PRISONS RECOMMENDED THAT A SURVEY OF SUCH SERVICES BE CONDUCTED AND THAT STANDARDS FOR PRISON LIBRARIES BE ESTABLISHED. THE SEMINAR REPORT INCLUDES PAPERS PRESENTED BY PARTICIPANTS ON THE ROLE OF THE CRIMINOLOGY LIBRARY, THE RESULTS OF A SURVEY OF LIBRARIES UNDERTAKEN IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE SEMINAR, COOPERATON AMONG LIBRARIES, THE NATIONAL CLEARINGHOUSE, THE INSTITUTE'S AUTOMATED CRIMINOLOGICAL INFORMATION SYSTEM, INDEXING, AND USER SERVICES. RESOLUTIONS OF THE SEMINAR, RECOMMENDED STANDARDS FOR PRISON LIBRARIES, AND A LIST OF PARTICIPANTS ARE APPENDED. FOR SEPARATE ABSTRACTS OF THE PAPERS, SEE NCJ-51054-51059.
