Abstract
THE UNIFORM CRIME REPORTING (UCR) PROGRAM PROVIDES A PERIODIC, NATIONWIDE ASSESSMENT OF CRIME BASED ON THE COOPERATIVE SUBMISSION OF DATA ON A REGIONAL BASIS. POLICE, SHERIFFS, AND STATE POLICE REPORT THE NUMBER OF MONTHLY OFFENSES THAT OCCUR IN THEIR REGIONS IN THE FOLLOWING CATEGORIES: MURDER AND NONNEGLIGIBLE MANSLAUGHTER, MANSLAUGHTER BY NEGLIGENCE, FORCIBLE RAPE, ROBBERY, ASSAULT, BURGLARY, LARCENY-THEFT, AND MOTOR VEHICLE THEFT. ARREST DATA ARE REPORTED MONTHLY FOR BOTH UCR PART I AND PART II OFFENSES BY CRIME CATEGORY, AND THE INFORMATION INCLUDES AGE, SEX, AND RACE OF PERSONS ARRESTED. ALONG WITH STATISTICS, THE REPORT INCLUDES DISCUSSIONS OF VOLUME, TRENDS, AND THE NATURE OF CRIMES BY CRIME TYPE. DATA ON LAW ENFORCEMENT PERSONNEL CONSIDER THE NUMBER AND SEX OF OFFICERS WORKING IN TOWNS, CITIES, AND REGIONS. INFORMATION IS ALSO INCLUDED ON NUMBERS OF LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS ASSAULTED OR KILLED IN 1977, AND TYPE OF ACTIVITY PERFORMED BY OFFICERS WITHIN ASSIGNMENT DESIGNATIONS. A USER'S GUIDE AND AN EXPLANATION OF CRIME DESIGNATIONS ARE APPENDED.
