A TEXT INTERPRETATION PROGRAM FOR A MINICOMPUTER DISPLAY PROCESSOR IS DESCRIBED FOR GENERATING THE FACIAL IMAGE OF A SUSPECT FROM COMPOSITE IDENTI-KIT FEATURES.
Abstract
THE PROGRAM SIMPLIFIES COMMUNICATION BETWEEN THE USER AND MACHINE-DISPLAY FACILITIES BY USING AN INTERACTIVE LANGUAGE THAT USES CONVERSATIONAL DIALOGUES. IN OPERATION, THE USE GIVES DESCRIPTIONS TO GENERATE A FACIAL IMAGE AND THE COMPUTER PROGRAM SERVES AS AN ARTIST. A SKETCHED INTERPRETATION OF THE DESCRIPTION APPEARS ON THE GRAPHIC DISPLAY IN RESPONSE TO THE USER'S NATURAL LANGUAGE INSTRUCTIONS. THE LANGUAGE, HOWEVER, IS SEVERELY RESTRICTED, BUT FLEXIBLE. ELEVEN FEATURES ARE IN THE EXISTING LANGUAGE: FACE, NOSE, HAIRLINE, EARS, CHIN, EYES, HAIR, MOUTH, JAW, EYEBROWS, AND CHEEKLINES. EACH CAN BE MODIFIED IN POSITION, SIZE, AND RELATIVE LOCATION TO OTHER FEATURES. ALL ARE INDIVIDUALLY ADDRESSABLE AND ALTERATIONS MAY BE MADE RELATIVE TO ANOTHER. FOR INSTANCE, EYEBROWS MAY BE MOVED CLOSER TO THE EYES. GLOBAL ALTERATIONS ARE ALSO POSSIBLE WHERE THE ENTIRE FACE IS SUBJECT TO MODIFICATIONS. THE PROGRAM WAS DESIGNED TO BE MODULAR SO THAT EXTENSIONS COULD BE REALIZED BY ADDING NEW FEATURE DISPLAY CODES OR BY EXPLOITING OTHER DISPLAY PROCESSOR HARDWARE FEATURES AS THEY BECOME AVAILABLE. IMPLEMENTATION IN A DISTRIBUTED COMPUTER ENVIRONMENT RESEMBLES EXISTING LAW ENFORCEMENT COMPUTER SYSTEMS. FURTHER, TRANSMISSION OF GENERATED IMAGES, REPRESENTED IN DISPLAY PROCESSOR INSTRUCTION FORM, CAN USE EXISTING COMPUTER COMMUNICATION CHANNELS. IN THIS WAY, SIMULTANEOUS INTERACTION BY MULTIPLE USERS, EASY DISTRIBUTION OF IMAGES, AND IMAGE RECOGNITION ARE FACILITATED. GRAPHICS AND REFERENCES ARE INCLUDED. (KBL)
