THIS COMPILATION OF 182 BOOKS, JOURNAL ARTICLES, AND FIELD STUDIES DEALS WITH BOTH THE NATURE OF THE POLICE EXECUTIVE'S WORK AND WITH EXECUTIVE BEHAVIOR IN GENERAL. IT IS BASED ON A SEARCH OF THREE DATA BASES.
Abstract
THE MATERIALS WERE SELECTED FROM THE SEVERAL THOUSAND DOCUMENTS CONTAINED IN THE NCJRS (NATIONAL CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFERENCE SERVICE), SSCI (SOCIAL SCIENCES CITATION INDEX), AND THE MI (MANAGEMENT INDEX) COMPUTERIZED INFORMATION CLEARING HOUSES. ALL DOCUMENTS ARE IN ENGLISH AND WERE PUBLISHED BETWEEN 1962 AND 1979. THE BIBLIOGRAPHY IS DIVIDED INTO FOUR CATEGORIES: (1) DIARY AND OBSERVATIONAL STUDIES OF MANAGERIAL BEHAVIOR--WHICH CONTAINS FIELD STUDIES AND DIARY STUDIES; (2) METHODOLOGY--WHICH CONCERNS EXPERIMENTAL METHOD: (3) POLICE EXECUTIVE, MANAGEMENT, AND OBSERVATIONAL STUDIES OF POLICE; AND (4) CLASSIFICATION SCHEMES--WHICH GIVE VARIOUS TYPOLOGIES OF MANAGERIAL WORK. MOST OF THE MATERIAL IN THE POLICE EXECUTIVE SECTION IS OF A PRESCRIPTIVE NATURE. THE INTRODUCTION POINTS OUT THAT ONE OF THE MAJOR PROBLEMS IN STUDYING POLICE EXECUTIVE WORK IS THAT LITTLE KNOWLEDGE OF ACTUAL JOB BEHAVIOR EXISTS. MORE COMPREHENSIVE STUDIES ARE NEEDED. (GLR)
